DRAMA EXERCISES

There is a lot going on in the typical English classroom, but often I think that students feel left behind in terms of true understanding of the texts. Perhaps they see each reading as a means to an end or just an assignment – but while there are some students that relate to the texts most are left without an in depth understanding of the material. I believe this is because in order for a person to truly understand something they read, they must first relate it to their own lives and or personal experience. Drama in the classroom can strengthen the bonds of the student’s imagination regarding the texts, while at the same time, promoting a deeper understanding. Drama brings the story to life – it makes the material – current. When students no longer see the stories they read as time period specific but instead that the characters were/ are people just like them in some ways – feeling the same things and asking the same questions – they will learn. This website shows how drama skills can promote this process in the classroom as well as other ideas surrounding this teaching strategy.
